Arts of Play

Play is an element of Bermudian life that keeps our citizenry, young and old, grounded in their roots and relaxed enough to tackle the hardships of life. Traditionally children enjoyed activities such as jacks, hopscotch and games of marbles; nowadays, entertainment is more along the lines of contemporary media-based amusements, and adults enjoy formal (and oftentimes very competitive) games of cricket, rugby and soccer. Kite flying is enjoyed by both children and adults, and is a staple of the Bermudian Easter holiday season, with parents either buying their children high-quality kites from stores around the island, or helping their kids to make traditional Bermuda kites out of sticks, tissue paper, glue and other craft items. Fishing, dancing and collecting loquats are also popular activities enjoyed by both the young and old of Bermuda.
