Bermuda, an island of limited space, is by no means bereft of a history full of cultural mores, traditions, folklife, beliefs, prejudices, colourful characters, rituals, religions, and behaviours that are interwoven in the island’s cultural tapestry. Originally written for the stage, Ruth E. Thomas has created more than 70 MOSAICS – nine of which are recorded in this book. Through these MOSAICS, Miss Thomas has brought to life many of these facets of her island’s identity. The MOSAICS act as informants, history teachers, and preservers of segments of past practices. They are a simple and unpretentious record of the past. The MOSAICS are like a mirror, delving into the core of what it means to be Bermudian. Collaboration with the talented Bermudian illustrator Edwin M. E. Smith has resulted in a set of visuals that vividly capture the spirit of some of our ancestors. It is the hope that this book will rekindle memories and inspire the reader to begin their own record of events and stories from the past.
